Description

WR 134 is a variable Wolf-Rayet (WR) star in Cygnus located about 6000 light years from earth. In the portrait above, it is the bright star near the center of the blue ring and is identified as HD191765 in the roll-over annotations. Intense radiation and stellar winds from WR 134 have carved a bubble in the surrounding gas and dust resulting in the unique ring structure seen here.

I imaged WR 134 in narrow band with a focus on the OIII data that makes up the blue ring structure. My goals for this image was to show the entire ring. Ha and SII create a nice contrasting background of hydrogen emission nebula. I used the following mapping to approximate the natural colors of the various emissions. The specific weighting helped me to maximize contrast.

- Red: 0.5 * Ha + 0.5 * SII
- Green: 0.25 * SII + 0.75 * OIII
- Blue: OIII

The stars come from RGB data.
